Reminiscing over classic cars
By Liz Alderslade
Wayne Arthur, Kapunda, doesn’t know
how his love of classic cars began, but he
couldn’t be more engrossed in his collection
of 60-70s classic cars.
Wayne attributes his addiction to starting
with his first classic car, his 1956 Hillman
Minx, which he bought 20 years ago.
Now his collection has grown to hold a
1976 Ford ZH Marquis Fairlane, a 1963 EJ
Holden Special and a 1969 Jaguar Series
“Its not just collecting them, it’s that
aspect of maintaining them. I don’t know
what attracted me, I think it was purely the
shape of the cars and the way they drive.
Also what ran them and the old style look
of the car. It brings back memories,” said
“It was something I started doing 20 years
ago and it has just sort of been something
I have done all through my life. Collected
old cars, tinkered with them, get them up
“There are lots of different things that
attract you to playing around with old cars.
I enjoy it and will probably keep doing it
and I can’t see myself not doing it. I don’t
drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t waste money
on anything else, just playing around with
Wayne sourced the Ford ZH Marquis
Fairlane from Kapunda and was lucky
enough to have spotted it at a swap meet.
He has owned the car for around four
years now. He has done a bit of work on the
Fairlane with a new exhaust, brake work
While there was work to be done on the
Fairlane, he doesn’t regret buying the classic
car at all.
The Jaguar was something that Wayne fell
in love with instantly. He loved the look of
the Jaguar. The shape, curves and contours
of the vehicle caught his eye.
The vehicle isn’t under an historical
registration due to the 350 Chevy engine
that is inside the Jaguar.
But Wayne doesn’t mind that it’s not
the original Jaguar engine since they are
incredibly expensive to fix if they break and
it is easier to source parts for the 350 Chevy
Wayne has owned the Jaguar for around
10 years and said, “One hundred per cent,
everytime I look at it, I still get a smile on
my face looking at the front of my Jaguar.”
The EJ Holden was acquired off a friend
around 10 years ago in a fully restored
Wayne swapped one of his cars with his
friend who needed a ute for his work.
The car he swapped, a 1996 VS Commodore
Ute, wasn’t a high market value classic car
like the EJ Holden became afterwards.
“On his part, he would be spewing. He
had it all fully restored. It was in top quality
condition. The ute went down in price and
the EJ went up in price,” said Wayne.
His collection ranges in different types of
vehicles from different manufacturers. He
doesn’t mind dabbling around the classic
car market since it gives him an insight into
different model engines and how they all
work and differ from each other.
“I have learnt to do things and remove
parts, take parts or fix parts. Just purely
through trial and error and figuring
out the best way to do it. It’s pretty much
self-taught. You just pull it apart and hope
you can put it back together,” laughed Wayne.
While many collectors of older vehicles
are into car racing, Wayne said he never
developed a love for racing at all.
He worked hard to buy his first car when
he was young and learnt never to thrash a
vehicle through burnouts or speeding.
“I learnt to be respectful of my cars and
look after them. If you look after them, they
will look after you,” said Wayne.
Wayne has a strong passion for maintaining
classic cars and doesn’t mind that he suffers
from ‘tennis elbow’ occasionally.

collection of classic cars four years ago.
