Do you have a problem of “our teenagers
don’t relate to us”?
If teeners see us as grouches – certainly
not as friends – and lose confidence in our
leadership, this of course puts us on the
We need to take the “offensive” – getting
in front of our children, taking the lead,
not merely following and criticising them
My wife did this brilliantly with our
teenagers through her open house policy and
generous hospitality. She made it clear that
all our teenagers’ friends were genuinely
welcome in our home any time.
Our teenage daughter, who was herself
quite outgoing and welcoming, took full
advantage of this situation. As it turned
out, it was easy for her to invite church
colleagues to come to our home – our local
church premises were a mere “stone’s throw”
from our house.
The young people who came enjoyed the
unstructured interaction and freedom of
expression of just “doing their own thing.”
It turned out that, by inviting these
friends of their own personal choice, our
family’s teeners were – without realising
it – being led by us!
As far as they were concerned it was
entirely their initiative. A winning formula
that couldn’t fail.
